Why a Diagnosis Does Not Guarantee a VA Disability Rating

Having a documented medical diagnosis does not automatically mean the condition is service-connected. VA requires evidence showing a connection, or nexus, between the current diagnosis and an event, injury, or disease that occurred during military service. Without this established nexus, a diagnosis alone cannot be rated.

Even when a condition is recognized as service-connected, it does not guarantee a compensable rating of 10 percent or higher. VA assigns a zero percent, non-compensable rating when a service-connected condition is documented but its symptoms do not currently meet the minimum severity threshold required by the rating schedule.

Every condition is evaluated against specific rating criteria in 38 CFR Part 4. These criteria measure severity through structured facts such as range of motion, frequency of symptoms, required treatments, and overall functional impairment. Your rating depends on matching your documented evidence to these exact criteria, not on the name of your diagnosis.

A medical record that simply states a diagnosis without detailing the symptoms, frequency, or functional limitations is often insufficient for a higher rating. VA rating decisions rely on detailed, measurable evidence, often captured during a Compensation and Pension exam or on a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ), to determine the proper rating percentage.
